The main characteristics of beer and the challenges for the development of the beer sector were presented by the members of the Hellenic Association of Brewers in their first “Beer day” organized during the annual HORECA expo in Athens.
The first “Beer Day”, an initiative by the Hellenic Association of Brewers organized and held during the annual HORECA expo, was concluded successfully. The event was dedicated exclusively to beer and was organized by The Hellenic Association of Brewers, whose members are amongst the most important breweries and microbreweries in Greece. During the event, the local and international trends in beer were discussed, whereas there was an exchange of views and important information with the public regarding the product of beer, its history, best practices and the course and future of the beer sector in Greece.
During the open conversation between the brewers and the public, the view that the Greek brewery sector is in the right path, was expressed. The previous year’s successful results are considered a landmark for the future of the sector, however according to the President of the Association Mr. S. Panagiotou, an organized effort and participation is required, for the Greek brewery sector to acquire the position it deserves in the world beer map.
At the same time, the need for cooperation between all producers is required, in order to train the consumer and introduce him to the magic of beer. This would have as a result the increase in consumption and the restriction of the product’s seasonality, whose sales so far depend to a large extent on the course of tourism and consumption during the summer.
Finally, the high taxation of the sector was mentioned, which inhibits the growth of the industry and significantly affects the final sale price of the product to consumers.
The event was hosted by the well know TV presenter, Mr. Petros Polychronidis, who also hosted interactive games with the public, such as blind tasting of different types of beer and beer quiz.
During the first “Beer day”, special speakers were invited to present the following subjects:
Brewing process, beer serving methods, proper storage conditions and handling of the product, as well as safety and responsible drinking issues.
Another important section of the event was the introduction of a beer list and the adoption of modern ways of incorporating beer in the various beer outlets. Innovative concepts from beer outlets from abroad were presented.
The section was hosted by Mr. Spyros Kerkyras, owner of the company “Bar Solutions”.
Finally, the clinical dietician – nutritionist, Mr. Ioannis Chrysou presented nutritional myths and truths about the consumption of beer.
