After a long period of restrictions on beer production and consumption due to the Covid-19 health crisis, the industry seems to be gradually recovering. We notice an upward trend starting in 2021 and continuing, although in many countries it has not yet reached the levels of 2019. Increased production and transport costs are a brake on this growth, preventing a possible opening up of exports, which could offset the reduced consumption of the previous years.
However, beyond the long-term effects of the pandemic, there are other challenges that industry professionals have to face, which have a significant impact on their activities.
The war in Ukraine, the limitation of government subsidies, the increase in the cost of living and the prices of raw materials are acting as inhibitors to the growth of the industry. Furthermore, climate change is a constant challenge, underlining the need to invest in sustainable and eco-friendly solutions.
Despite the difficulties, brewers continue to innovate, evolve, and bring new products to the market. Encouragingly, the number of active breweries in Europe in 2022 increased to around 9,680 from 9,500 in 2021, with Greece now having 75 active breweries.
Europe’s brewers continue to underline the importance and uniqueness of beer, while adapting production to the new realities and looking after the future of the industry.
